EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES FOR REGISTRARS
Registrar Activities
NCGPT educational activities are structured at three levels
1. Teaching within the practice
Supervisors regularly conduct a range of educational activities for registrars including:
- Direct observation of consultations
- Review of patient records
- Topic discussion
- Feedback on progress
- Teaching practical procedures
- Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) searches
Registrars in their basic term have 3 hours per week in-practice structured teaching time. Advanced registrars have 2 hours per week. This is in addition to corridor consultations.
Basic and advanced registrars receive 2 External Clinical Teaching (ECT) Visits during their terms. Subsequent registrars receive 1 per term. These are performed by a NCGPT medical educator or GP supervisor to review the registrar's patient consultations by direct observation. NCGPT will contact registrars to arrange these visits.
Basic, advanced and subsequent registrars receive 2 Training Appraisal Visits per year. These are performed by a NCGPT medical educator to review the registrar's log books, learning plans and feedback. NCGPT will contact registrars to arrange these visits.
2. Locally delivered educational events throughout the region
NCGPT organise monthly half day education events in Ballina, Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie. These are conducted by our experienced medical educators in conjunction with local expert guest presenters. These sessions are open to all registrars in the region. See Education Calendar
In addition to this, there is a 2 day regional residential workshop at the start of each term for basic registrars to assist them with the transition from hospital to general practice. There is also a full day Aboriginal Health Cultural Awareness Workshop each term. See Education Calendar
3. Combined workshops in Sydney
NCGPT collaborates with 3 other regional training providers to run a 3 day workshop in Sydney each term for basic and advanced registrars. These workshops present a range of topics which are best suited to a larger group format, and for which the best resources are located in Sydney. It is also an excellent opportunity to meet with other registrars from around NSW.
For a detailed list of educational requirements see the Australian General Practice Training Guide for GP Registrars on the Australian General Practice Training website.
