Aboriginal Health Training

The North Coast has a large Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population and NCGPT works with a number of accredited community controlled Aboriginal Medical Services (AMS) in Ballina, Coffs Harbour, Grafton, Lismore, Kempsey and Casino.

Working with, and supporting, Aboriginal people is both challenging and rewarding. The experience provides an opportunity to learn about the management of chronic and complex illness, with excellent support and mentoring. It also provides registrars with the chance to learn about a culture very different from their own, and to meet some truly remarkable and inspiring people. In this setting you will find a unique opportunity to really make a difference.

Registrars are encouraged to complete a term in an AMS as part of routine training, or do an Advanced Rural Skills Post (ARSP) in Aboriginal Health as part of the FARGP.

The medicine in these posts is compelling and richly rewarding. The personal experience is equally gratifying.

Registrars in these posts are making an important contribution to a disadvantaged group of Australians.

I make more difference in one afternoon here than I do in a whole week in the mainstream practice!” NCGPT registrar

NCGPT has an accredited Aboriginal Health ARSP, based at Dharah Gibinj in Casino just outside of Lismore. NCGPT is exploring additional ARSPs at other AMSs in our region, including Durri in Kempsey, Galambila in Coffs Harbour, and Bulgarr Ngaru in Grafton on enquiry.

Two previous NCGPT subsequent registrars completed a FARGP and participated in a cultural emersion experience with traditional Indigenous Australians in the outback of SA. One participant described their encounter as “life changing” and “a powerful, enriching and confronting experience.”

Let us know if you have an interest in Aboriginal Health Training, NCGPT will help organise a deeply satisfying and well supported experience.
